Your Instagram Is Not Your Website (And It Could Disappear Tomorrow)

A question worth actually answering
If your business's Facebook or Instagram page got suspended tomorrow — wrongly, by an automated system, with no human to appeal to for two weeks — how would a new customer find you? For a lot of small businesses, the honest answer is: they wouldn't.
You don't own a social media page
You maintain it, at the platform's pleasure, under rules that can change without notice and get enforced by an algorithm that occasionally makes mistakes with no fast way to reach a human. It can be suspended, shadowbanned into invisibility, or simply deprioritized because the platform decided to show your followers more ads instead of more of your posts. None of that is hypothetical — it happens to real small businesses regularly, and there is rarely anyone to call.
A website works differently
You own the domain. You own the hosting. Nobody can suspend it because a moderation system flagged something unrelated. It shows up in Google search results whether or not an algorithm decided your latest post deserved reach today. It's the one piece of your online presence that answers to you and no one else.
This isn't “stop using social media”
Social media is genuinely useful for reach, especially for visual businesses — it's part of why we build merch and branding for clients too. The point isn't to abandon it. The point is that it shouldn't be the only place your business exists online. A website is the anchor; social platforms are ways to point people back toward it.
A simple test: search your own business name in Google right now. If the top result is a social media page instead of your own website, you're renting the most valuable piece of real estate your business has online.
The fix is smaller than it sounds
You don't need to rebuild your entire online presence. You need one place that's actually yours, with your hours, your services, your contact info, that nothing but your own choice can take offline.
